Cheltenham Animal Shelter and the Gloucestershire Animal Welfare Association has been rescuing and rehoming animals in Gloucestershire since 1926 and is located at the end of Gardners Lane just off the Swindon Road in Cheltenham. Despite a great deal of publicity in the area, it is still not unusual to find local residents who still do not know that the Shelter exists or where to find them. So the Dog Rescue Blog is here to give them a helping hand!

The mission of Cheltenham Animal Shelter is:

to provide shelter for homeless domestic animals from across the county whilst attempting to locate appropriate new homes. We also aim to educate members of the public and professionals in correct and appropriate animal husbandry through humane education programmes.

At present Cheltenham Animal Shelter have in 47 dogs, 33 cats, 8 rabbits, 2 degus and 2 hamsters all seeking new, loving homes. The majority of the animals are strays that have been picked by members of the public or the dog wardens. Unfortunately, more often than not, these animals are never reunited with their owners. This may be because they were purposely abandoned, or because they were not wearing an I.D. tag and were not been microchipped.

One of Cheltenham Animal Shelter’s current long stay residents is Bliss, a beautiful 2 year old German Shepherd. Despite having a great temperament, Bliss has been waiting for a home for months now. Cheltenham Animal Shelter will consider rehoming Bliss up to 70 miles from the Shelter. This includes areas such as Worcesetershire, Birmingham, West Midlands, Bristol, Swindon, Wiltshire, South Wales and Oxfordshire. Cheltenham Animal Shelter are always interested to hear from people with fundraising ideas to help generate the £500,000 that is needed each year to allow them to continue their rescue work in Gloucestershire and continue to care for long stay dogs like Bliss. You could sell home-made cakes, bric a brac, tea & coffee or home-made cards. You could even organise sponsored events such as walks, runs or even sky dives!
